The project, led by Přátelé New Renato in partnership with the New Renato Community Society, addresses interconnected sanitation and soil-fertility challenges in rural Kashitu. It establishes a community-run sanitation–fertilizer service chain using urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs) and composting systems to provide dignified sanitation, reduce pathogen exposure, and generate nutrient-rich fertilizers for local agriculture. The initiative integrates hands-on training, a Sanitation Club for local governance, demonstration plots, and educational outreach to ensure adoption, sustainability, and replicability. Solar- and locally sourced materials, combined with structured community management, allow the system to continue producing fertilizer and supporting hygiene improvements beyond the project timeline, while creating small-scale economic opportunities and climate-resilient practices for the community.
