Green Industry Innovation Accelerator (GIIA): Powering Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Green Transition
Implemented by the University Sarajevo School of Science and Technology, the Green Industry Innovation Accelerator (GIIA) is a strategic initiative aimed at helping Bosnia and Herzegovina transition toward a greener, more resilient industrial economy. With the country facing mounting pressure from environmental degradation and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the GIIA introduces a first-of-its-kind methodology to identify greening opportunities across industrial value chains. The project connects CBAM-affected sectors—beginning with cement production—with local innovators to co-develop sustainable products and solutions tailored to the Bosnian context.
Through on-site assessments, innovation workshops, and targeted support for SMEs and women-led businesses, the GIIA is building practical pathways for industries to reduce their carbon footprint while remaining competitive. Designed as a scalable and replicable model, the project not only addresses urgent environmental and economic challenges but also contributes to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s long-term green transition and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
