Protected landscapes designation and management guidelines in Georgia 

Protected landscape (PL) as a category of protected area is quite a new topic in Georgia. Although the country is rich in a mixture of its nature, biodiversity, and cultural heritage (thanks to a diversity of ethnics and communities with their traditions), so far mainly pristine natural areas (national parks) are preserved.

Czech expertise (partly financed also by CUP) played important role in the designation and management of Tusheti, Aragvi and Machakheli protected landscapes. Activities supported by the Czech government in Georgian PLs always reflected not only the Czech experience but took into account also approaches from other European Union countries.  

However, the above-mentioned protected landscapes were established on an ad hoc basis and a broader more systematic approach (subject of the focus of this project) is needed. 

The main beneficiary of this project/assignment is the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA). There is an assumption (supported by the attached support letter) that main beneficiary will use produced deliverables as technical guidance for amendment of respective legislation.
