Green Roofs of Sarajevo

During COVID-19 pandemic, Sarajevo and many cities in Western Balkan were in total lockdown, allowing its citizens to have a walk, dog-walk, short exercise outside only a few hours during the day. Moreover, especially in Sarajevo, there is a lack of urban greenery, which together with high air pollution coming from individual heating units and traffic has a negative additional effect on the citizens’ mental health and social behaviour.

The project proposes the new idea of greening the roofs of the residential buildings, which would have a positive effect on citizens and supported wider environment and adaptation to the climate change while being easily replicated and scaled up into other bigger and industrial cities in the country.

The initiative is implemented by EMPRESS a public benefit company that aims to promote sustainable consumption and production with a focus on manufacturing businesses and service providers.
